Gadsden mayor discusses State of the City
In his recent State of the City address on November 19, Gadsden Mayor Craig Ford highlighted the significant progress made during his first two years in office while laying out ambitious future plans. Speaking passionately to attendees at Coosa Landing, Ford urged residents to dismiss skeptics, asserting that transformative projects “will happen.” Central to Ford’s vision is the Coosa Harbor development, a $50 million riverfront venture led by developer Patrick Lawler, expected to revitalize the area formerly occupied by Rainbow Cinemas within two to three years.
Ford also announced plans for a new hotel with 105 rooms and a rooftop bar at the current City Hall site, promising enhanced property values in the vicinity. Other initiatives include attracting tenants to the former Goodyear site, constructing a $60-$70 million aquatic and recreation complex, and collaborating with Gadsden City Schools for a new swimming pool.
Additionally, Ford noted recent federal grants for urban infrastructure, efforts to improve city employee salaries, and ongoing streetscape enhancements. He expressed optimism about the city’s future, declaring, “You won’t recognize Gadsden in five years.” His administration aims to engage residents in this narrative, encouraging them to remain positive despite the broader negative climate.
The presentation, conducted as an interview with community engagement director Ruth Moffatt, showcased Ford’s high-energy approach and commitment to advancing Gadsden’s development while emphasizing teamwork with the City Council and staff. Ford acknowledged his frustration with the pace of local government, likening his drive to that of the animated character Road Runner, advocating for continued momentum in city projects.
