Former Georgia Tech Player, Retired Lawyer Identified as Couple in Alabama Crash
Mike and Darla McKenzie, a beloved couple from Atlanta, were tragically killed in a recent shooting, leaving their community in mourning. Mike McKenzie, a retired insurance lawyer from Cozen O’Connor, was known for his exceptional legal prowess and dedication to pro bono work, particularly with the Innocence Project, where he played a pivotal role in freeing wrongfully convicted individuals. His colleague, Imran Syed, praised Mike’s efforts over the years in arson/murder cases, stating that he helped secure the freedom of at least a dozen wrongfully convicted people without charging them or their families.
Darla McKenzie was remembered as a consummate mentor and a fiercely dedicated mother. Vanessa Goggans, a long-time colleague, expressed how Darla took a genuine interest in the lives of those she worked with and shared cherished memories of enduring a snowstorm at their office, highlighting Darla’s ability to create joy in challenging situations. Mike was also fondly recalled by colleagues as both a compassionate lawyer and an incredible friend.
Before their successful legal careers, Mike had been an accomplished player on the Georgia Tech football team. Goggans described the McKenzies as a loving couple who enjoyed retirement, actively hiking and planning trips together. Their deep love and partnership made them role models for their three children. The details surrounding their deaths remain undisclosed as authorities investigate the incident.
