Fatherhood initiative launched in Etowah County
A new initiative in Etowah County, Alabama, titled “Engaging Fathers for Effective Co-Parenting and Transformations” (EFFECT), aims to support fathers facing parenting challenges, especially in unstable situations. Funded by a $75,000 grant from the Children’s Trust Fund of Alabama, the program is open to fathers with children under 18, or up to 18 if still in school. Facilitator Tony Reddick, a former superintendent, emphasizes the need for education on fatherhood: “We teach various techniques… to help those individuals who are struggling.”
EFFECT offers a comprehensive curriculum, utilizing the 24:7 Dad program from the National Fatherhood Initiative, which focuses on developing nurturing skills often perceived as uncharacteristic for men. The program includes classroom training, group discussions, and personalized support, catering particularly to young fathers who may lack experience.
Lana Bellew, the grant writer, highlights that many fathers lack essential parenting skills, especially if they suddenly assume responsibility for children due to unforeseen circumstances. The program also addresses employment needs by linking participants with job training opportunities at GRACE Academy and local employers.
Additionally, a financial literacy component helps fathers understand the importance of fulfilling child support obligations. While existing fatherhood initiatives target incarcerated individuals, EFFECT is open to referrals from Community Corrections. Interested participants can reach Reddick at 256-490-1417 for more information.
