EPA initiates cleanup of improperly stored waste at Gadsden plating facility
GADSDEN, Ala. — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced plans to remediate hazardous waste at the Techtrix, Inc. facility, situated at 525 Plainview Street in Gadsden. Established in 1987, this 50,000-square-foot electroplating and metal finishing shop has faced multiple compliance issues; it was cited by environmental regulators in 2012, 2014, and 2019 for mismanagement of hazardous waste. In 2021, the EPA revealed significant concerns related to the site’s waste handling and ordered necessary cleanup measures. However, the deceased owner’s absence has hindered the site’s management.
Mayor Craig Ford expressed a commitment to collaborating with the EPA and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) to ensure a thorough and swift cleanup, emphasizing that accountability for past mismanagement will not be relinquished. Following the identification of leaking storage tanks in August, the EPA initiated immediate response actions and is now assuming control over cleanup efforts.
The EPA has confirmed hazardous materials, including cyanide and corrosive wastes, are present at the site and that cleanup operations might last several months. They plan to conduct community meetings to keep residents informed as the situation develops. The Gadsden-Etowah Emergency Management Agency, along with local fire and police departments, will assist in the cleanup coordination. Overall, these actions signify a robust effort to address historical environmental issues in Gadsden and ensure community safety.
