Sand Mountain Sam Predicts Early Spring at Annual Possum Day Celebration
The whimsical tradition of Sand Mountain Sam, the region’s beloved weather-predicting marsupial, drew crowds to Old Mill Park in Boaz for the annual Possum Day celebration. Known for its lighthearted take on winter and spring forecasts, the event this year featured an array of festivities, including food trucks and live performances by local artists such as Billy Droze and the Sand Mountain Hillbillies.
Attendees eagerly awaited the moment when Sam would reveal her weather prognosis. In an exciting proclamation, Sam did not see her shadow, forecasts indicating an early arrival of spring. Among the attendees was Alexia Crouse, a birthday celebrant from Kentucky who traveled over five hours to witness Sam’s prediction, sharing her enthusiasm while wearing a T-shirt adorned with baby opossums.
Highlighted by the crowning of this year’s Possum Queens—Senior Possum Queen Sally Hines Day, Little Miss Possum Queen Ryleigh McGraw, and Grand Supreme Possum Queen Jaylee Camper—the event was a celebration of community spirit and joy. Sponsored by the City of Boaz and Bama Bucks Wildgame Restaurant, Possum Day continues to be a cherished local tradition, keeping the whimsical legacy of Sand Mountain Sam alive. As the countdown to Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction on February 2 approaches, residents reflect on what is sure to be another memorable season ahead.
