City of Gadsden tackles abandoned properties, offers lots for affordable housing
Gadsden Takes Action Against Nuisance Properties to Revitalize Neighborhoods
Gadsden, AL—The city of Gadsden is actively tackling the issue of abandoned and dilapidated homes, with Mayor Craig Ford reporting the demolition of over 100 houses so far, and an additional 75 scheduled for the upcoming year. These vacant properties, often tax delinquent for three years or more, have become a concern for local residents following the closure of the Goodyear plant in 2020, which led to an exodus of residents from the area.
Mayor Ford highlighted that many new arrivals have opted for the construction of newer homes, neglecting the upkeep of older properties. The planned demolitions aim to improve community safety and aesthetics, as echoed by long-time resident Charles Temple, who recounted struggles with vagrants using abandoned homes for shelter—a situation that sometimes resulted in dangerous fires.
In an effort to revitalize these neighborhoods, the city is leveraging its land bank to acquire the properties. Local residents, including those like Temple, have expressed interest in purchasing the vacant lots to expand their own properties. Furthermore, the city intends to offer these parcels to local developers, promoting the construction of affordable housing options. As Mayor Ford noted, this collaborative approach not only facilitates a transition from renting to homeownership but also rejuvenates Gadsden’s housing landscape, contributing positively to the community’s future.
