Alabama football power Coosa Christian loses two appeals, must sit out the playoffs
The Coosa Christian Conquerors, last season’s Class 1A state runner-up, face significant penalties this year after the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) determined they violated the Coaching-Outside-the-Season rule. Following a special meeting of the AHSAA’s Central Board of Control, Coosa Christian has been forced to forfeit five games and is barred from postseason play until the end of 2025. Initially found guilty of the rule infraction earlier in the season, Coosa Christian was compelled to forfeit its win against Cleveland High. The situation escalated when the AHSAA discovered undisclosed details regarding an ineligible player, leading to the additional forfeitures against Susan Moore, Falkville, Southeastern, and Cold Springs, resulting in a season record of 4-6.
In response, Coosa Christian has filed a lawsuit in the Montgomery County Circuit Court seeking to reverse the ruling and gain temporary permission to partake in the postseason. The school argues that the penalties were unjust, asserting that “athletic development and training,” allegedly conducted by a coach with an ineligible student, is not classified under AHSAA’s jurisdiction.
Moreover, the fallout from these rulings has reshaped the region’s playoff landscape, with top teams now consisting of Southeastern, Falkville, Susan Moore High School, and Cold Springs. The school maintains that it adhered to AHSAA rules and continues to contest the legitimacy of the enforcement actions taken against them.
